Description:
Limited to 8 participants—register soon! Flash nonfiction, also called micro-memoir, is an increasingly popular form of life writing seen in literary journals such as Brevity and Sweet Lit. Flash vividly captures a moment in time, a specific location, a relationship, experience, or emotion. We will read and discuss examples of brief nonfiction, including book-length collections of brief nonfiction, such as Safekeepingby Abigail Thomas and The Black Notebooks by Toi Derricote. We will examine how, in collections such as these, the separate flashes accrue to form a memoir-in-essays. Writers at any level of experience are welcome, from those just starting out to those working on their own collection of essays. The skills mastered by writing and studying flash nonfiction easily transfer to longer personal essays and memoirs. Week One / Introducing Flash Nonfiction Week Two / Childhood Memories Week Three / Grief and Trauma Week Four / Speaking Truth to Power Week Five / Linking essays to create a book Week Six / Publication and Beyond
