Description: We have been warned! Dystopian literature portrays a nightmarish society controlled and oppressed. It alerts the reader to the dangers of current trends left unchecked. This class examines how literature illustrates these potential threats, whether from government, technology or corporations. Discussion of our contemporary responses will be part of each class. Familiarity with Fahrenheit 451, 1984 and Brave New World will be helpful. Orwell and Huxley will be compared through the lens of Neil Postman’s Amusing Ourselves to Death.
