Location: VanDusen Guides Classroom | 5151 Oak St, Vancouver, BC, V6M 4H1

Description:

Everyone is welcome to this 6-week program! All levels of painting abilities. Artist and illustrator Susan will bring you to the Garden to create watercolour sketches, and in the classroom, you can complete a finished painting.

What you find in the Garden, new spring buds, flowering bulb plants, blossoming trees and foliage, will help inspire you to create patterns, textures and details on your watercolour paper. From a fine pencil line sketch of your composition, you will add layers of colour washes, wet into wet, wet on dry and bring colours to clear.

Susan’s group and individual instructions ensure that each participant can progress at their own pace while she shares her skills, a few new techniques, and a close-up of images and landscapes.

Susan suggests that participants bring the following materials:

Paper - Arches 140lb-300lb. cold press watercolour paper, 9” x 12” or larger.

Watercolour Paints - Holbein brand: Red (Carmine) Yellow (New Gamboge) Blue (Peacock blue). Can add Olive Green, Opera (hot pink), and Payne’s grey.

Detailed Brushes – size 01 for fine detail. A good array of brushes includes sizes 04, 1, 4, and 6.

Mixing Palette - plastic or ceramic white surface

Sketching – 2b mechanical pencil and white eraser

Water – 2 mason jars or 2 yogurt containers

Blow Dryer – nice to have for drying paint layers quickly

Online pre-registration is required. This six-session series will take place in person on Thursdays, starting on May 12th and concluding on June 16th.
