Description:

Explore how to use native plants to beautify your garden and help build habitat for urban wildlife like bees, butterflies, birds and more. Species biodiversity is at increasing risk as our climate continues to change, and we need all hands on deck to rebuild habitat to welcome nature back to our cities, backyards and urban green spaces.

This 2.5 hrs in-person course with Jessica Henry, VBGA educator with a background in ecological and food garden design, will introduce a variety of (Southern, coastal BC) native perennials, shrubs and trees that can be easily incorporated into your garden. Transitioning to ecological gardening practices can make your yard and garden beautiful and biodiverse and contribute to climate resiliency.

We’ll spend the first part of the class out in the Garden ‘meeting’ some of our native plants before returning to the classroom to discuss simple changes to the way we approach landscaping and garden maintenance.

Learn about which native plants to consider, where to source these plants in the Lower Mainland, plant lists to help with species selection for different conditions (sun, shade, etc.), soil and plant care and considerations. We will also explore the habitat needs of urban wildlife.

Please dress for the weather as we will spend part of the class outdoors in the Garden.

Online pre-registration is required.
