Description :

Join us in the Bird Garden on May 14th from 5pm-7pm for an informative and fascinating evening observing conservation reasearch in action in support of wild birds in and around our city. Vancouver Avian Research Centre (VARC) team members will be conducting hummingbird & songbird banding in the Bird Garden with the goal of learning more about the bird species using the urban oasis of the Garden as habitat, contributing to reasearch monitoring their population levels and health. This education evening is a great way to learn about conservation science field work, the many issues facing our wild bird populations, and ways you can get involved and take action to support local birds in your own backyard.

VARC conducts bird monitoring and banding, provides research, demonstration, education, volunteer opportunities, and visitor programs at its main Colony Farm field station in Coquitlam, BC.

VARC's primary objective is to provide data and research support that will allow for the safeguarding of bird habitats to ensure their long-term survival by providing scientifically defensible strategies for avian and ecosystem conservation.

This session is suitable for families (children will need to be supervised at all times), although please note there can be long wait times between bandings, and this is primarily and observational event, so please consider this factor for younger children. Please bring a folding/camp chair with you if possible as the evening involves relaxing in the evening garden while waiting for the birds. Cancellation Policy: This program will NOT run if the weather is rainy or otherwise unsuitable for the health of the birds. Participants will be informed of any cancellations the MORNING OF THE PROGRAM. Registered participants will be given priority booking for the next session should there be a cancellation by the VBGA due to the weather, or offered a full refund of the registration fee ($5.00 + tax for non-members). Refunds will only be given in the event the VBGA cancels the program, not for no-shows as this is a popular program with limited spots. Covid-19 Policy: Please do not visit the Garden or attend VBGA in-person programs if you are feeling unwell or are experiencing Covid-19 symptoms.
