Description :

How do plants connect us to the places we live, our communities and cultures, and the planet? Join us in the Garden for the day, featuring two workshops exploring how to use stories and storytelling to connect students to the natural world, and themselves.

Indigenous Initiatives Coordinator for the VBGA, Geronimo Alec, will offer a guided Garden walk to learn about storytelling and local plant ecology from an Indigenous perspective, while discussing protocol and resources available to support teacher's confidence in sharing Indigenous stories with their students.

In the second workshop, Poh Tan will share her research in science education applying Indigenous Hawaiian approachs to teaching science from the heart. How can we connect at a deeper level with plants that are non-native to our local area? How can storytelling from diverse cultures help connect learning through science and art? Poh will share examples of how biology, genetics, culture, and art can intersect to bring science/environmental literacy that connects the mind, body, and spirit.

Poh Tan is a scientist, author, entrepreneur and educator with a Ph.D. in Experimental Medicine, currently pursuing a second Ph.D. in Education. Her research focuses on understanding scientific literacy development through different lenses, including Indigenous Hawaiian epistemology.
