In April 1986, Harry and Dick White and Mike Riste met to begin the process to have the Department of Lands & Forests allow a society to take over the abandoned 1930 University Golf Course clubhouse and to raise funds to transform the clubhouse into a golf museum for BC. In Nov 1986, the BC Golf House Society gained possession of the historic building. Using volunteer labour, donated materials, and monetary donations, the group renovated the 1930 structure into a golf museum which opened on May 6, 1989. It is still the only stand-alone state or provincial golf museum in North America.

We invite you to play your next round of golf at the museum. The 2,500 square feet on the main floor is divided into 17 holes, each focusing on an aspect of golf. Hole # 5, the library, houses over 7,000 books. Hole #13, the Golf Hall of Fame of BC, honours the best provincial players who compete on zone, provincial, district, national, and international levels. Hole #18 is a separate structure adjacent to the main building which houses a 1911 Fordham tractor – the first gas tractor to work on a golf course in BC.

Mike Riste acts as the volunteer office manager and historian. He writes extensively on the history of golf in the Pacific Northwest, has published four historical golf books and collaborated on all club histories produced in the northwest. Today he is recognized as an authority on the history of golf on the Pacific Coast, specializing in “Lost Golf Courses”.
