During the 1930's in Canada in the midst of the Great Depression, left-wing, socialist and Christian-activist ideas were considered by mainstream Canadian society to be the territory of dangerous idealists. However, many Canadian intellectuals, writers, artists and educators thought that neither the Liberal party of Mackenzie King, nor the Conservative party of W.B. Bennett had the slightest intention or ability to create a society that cared about the welfare of its citizens.

Therefore, to support a new political party like the CCF (the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation founded in 1933) was to have a highly romantic, adventurous temperament and outlook – to believe in just causes and to have the courage to take public action in the service of one’s ideals.

This illustrated presentation will introduce a group of committed and purposeful individuals who dreamed of making a better Canada in a better world. The focus will be the life and times of John King Gordon, who exemplified the aims and activities of these individuals, and who also discovered that the romance of politics could lead to the politics of romance.

Molly Ungar taught Canadian and Quebec History at a number of Universities in Ontario and Quebec plus the University of the Fraser Valley. She gave TALK the excellent presentation on How We Got to the 49th Parallel last spring.
