Description :
Ellen Farrugia, a violinist who has been performing professionally for over 35 years, will speak about how music affects our brains and how we communicate with each other and society as a whole. From personal experiences in the profession, to well-known studies in the field, she will explore why music is a necessary form of expression, especially when there are no words that capture the emotion. Ellen will demonstrate some of these points by playing the violin, using examples of folk music from ancient times to the last 50 years, to show common themes of the human condition. Music brings us together in a world which is divided, and it is a universal language which predates conventional language. Ellen Farrugia is a professional musician. She has played in the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony, Orchestra London, the Toronto Symphony, the Canadian Opera Company orchestra, the Esprit Orchestra, Vancouver Opera Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony, the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra, the Vancouver Island Symphony, and the Surrey City Orchestra, of which she is a founder. Ellen teaches violin privately and has coached ensembles with the Surrey Youth Orchestra, the Semiahmoo Strings, the Richmond Delta Youth Orchestra, and has adjudicated competitions in Vancouver, Delta and Surrey.
