Lieu : Richmond campus | 8771 Lansdown Road, Richmond, BC, V6X3X7

Description :

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) was launched in December 2021 and its first images were released in the summer of 2022. Astronomers are already using it to make important contributions to several areas of astronomy, such as the study of exoplanets (planets orbiting stars other than the Sun), the lifecycle of stars, and the evolution of the universe, to name just a few. Results and images from the telescope regularly feature in the news media. In this session, we will learn why the JWST is so powerful, the science behind some of the areas of astronomy it is contributing to, and the kinds of questions it will help us answer in the coming years and decades. In addition, it is hoped that the session will help attendees to better appreciate and understand the media coverage the JWST and its results are receiving.
