Description:

Clayworx has installed several colourful and inspiring large mosaic in the Old East Village, including the 3 full length panels totaling approximately 900 square feet on the Indwell – Embassy Commons building at 744 Dundas Street and 10 squares embedded in the sidewalks on Dundas Street.

This 9-week class offers you a chance to create your own small mosaic work of art (approximately one and a half square foot in size). 

The first class will begin with an introduction to mosaics, including a short tour of the mosaics around the Clayworx building. You will be introduced to the techniques and given design considerations.  In the following classes you will design and make a small 6" x 6"  mosaic using colourful ceramic shards to first familiarize yourself with the necessary techniques.  You will then under the guidance of the instructor begin the design your mosaic work of art. 

You will learn surface decoration techniques to make and decorate your own central tile for your mosaic starting from a slab of wet clay, mimicking the techniques used in our large mosaic installations. You will proceed to select pieces from our assortment of colorful shards to make your design around your central piece.  You will affix (mortar) the pieces according to your design onto precut backerboard and apply grout.  At the end of the 8 weeks you will have a beautiful work of art to adorn your home!

Classes are 3 hours each for 9 weeks.
