Notes: BRiCk Boat-Nanza Rules 2024 Have fun, but safely! The safety of the participants, spectators, staff, and competitions is the number one priority and should be treated as such for all races. It is mandatory for all competitors wear a PFD (personal flotation device) while racing. We will have PFD’s onsite. Motors are not permitted, so bring your best paddlers! You can make your paddles or use store bought paddles. Boats and paddles must be made prior to the race. The boat's hull must be made of corrugated cardboard and should be constructed and sealed with any of the following: tape, caulk, glue, latex paint, or varnish. Above the hull the boat may include additional decorative materials if they don't aid in flotation. Be creative and have fun designing! If any illegal items used in construction are discovered during the pre- or post– race inspection, the boat will be disqualified Boats must have completely enclosed side walls so that no part of the lower body is outside the boat. The boat’s passenger area must not be enclosed above the occupant’s shoulders so as to interfere with escape should the vessel begin to sink. Boat design is left to the builders. Let your imagination take over; make your boat look like a race car, flying saucer, dragon, etc. as long as the decoration does not aid in the floatation Teams must be a minimum of one person in the boat; and Up to two (2) additional people are allowed at the start line to assist with boat launch. Age divisions: Lil’ Captain Division for ages 6 – 13 and Big Captain Division for ages 14 and up. The race will be one length of the pool. Awards: - Spearhead Award (Fastest Boat - must finish race) - Titanic Award (Most Dramatic Sinking) - The On-Point Award (most creative them - team costumes, boat decorations, etc.) Suggested supplies: Corrugated cardboard (required) Acrylic latex caulk Glue Paper package tape Paint (latex preferred) Paint brush or roller Duct tape Varnish Clamps Measuring tape Straight edge Scissors Restricted Hull Supplies: 2-part glues (i.e., Epoxy or polyester resin) Styrofoam Metal, or metal foils Wood BUILDING YOUR BOAT: Gather your team Choose a theme & name for the boat Sketch out your blueprints Cut cardboard to size Assemble pieces of cardboard into a boat using glue or making creases and folding the cardboard as needed Allow glue to fully dry Cover cardboard surfaces with duct tape Add any desired decorations Build or borrow a pair of oars
