Description:

Learners who attend the Sustainable Gardening Camp will experience 3 different gardens on three different days of the week. This lets them see that not all gardens are the same; that gardens have different layouts and plant species; that the same species of plant varieties grow differently under different conditions; etc. Moving from one garden to the next also provides campers with ample room for applying what they learn in one garden context to another, and seeing first hand how that skill or learning might be applied differently in a new garden landscape.

Participants of the Sustainable Gardening Camp will learn the skills needed to keep a garden environmentally friendly and adapted to climate change.

The campers will earn achievement points on a Garden badge. The badge levels will include but not be limited to these levels:
1. I have learned about 3 native alternatives and 2 drought resistant plants that will help sustain an
environmentally friendly garden.
2. I have learned about 3 pollinator-friendly plants and why they are important for climate change.
3. I have learned 2 ways to conserve or minimize water in the garden.
4. I have learned 3 ways I can take steps to enhance soil sustainability.
5. I have learned about eco-friendly pest management in the garden. This means creating Slug Catchers, protective covers over a frame; and companion planting to repel unwanted insects as
well as add nutrients to the soil.

These activities are run in collaboration with Ça pousse!, which is an educational program of The Depot Community Food Centre.
