Description:

Overall, this class aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of speech and debate principles, as well as the skills necessary for effective communication and critical thinking. Through lecture, tons of hands-on practice and constructive feedback, students will develop confidence and proficiency in public speaking and argumentation. Minimum of 6 students to hold the class. The following will be covered in class:

Introduction to Speech and Debate: Understand the purpose and benefits of speech and debate activities. Learn the various formats of debate and types of speeches.

Public Speaking Skills: Develop foundational public speaking skills such as eye contact, gestures, and posture. Practice delivering prepared speeches to build confidence.

Argumentation and Persuasion: Learn how to construct persuasive arguments using evidence and logic. Explore different techniques for persuading an audience.

Research Skills: Develop research skills to gather evidence and information to support arguments. Learn how to evaluate sources for credibility and relevance.

Debate Formats: Explore different debate formats and understand the structure of debates and the roles of each speaker.

Critical Thinking: Enhance critical thinking skills by analyzing arguments, identifying logical fallacies, and evaluating evidence.

Listening and Responding: Practice active listening skills during debates and speeches. Learn how to formulate thoughtful responses and rebuttals.

Organization and Time Management: Learn effective organization and time management skills for preparing speeches and participating in debates.

Ethics and Civility: Understand the importance of ethics and civility in speech and debate activities. Learn how to engage in respectful discourse and constructive criticism.

Reflection and Feedback: Reflect on personal growth and progress throughout the course. Provide and receive constructive feedback from peers and instructors to improve performance.​
