Description:

Celebrating Women in Leadership…on International Women’s Day

“Sure, Fred Astaire was great, but don’t forget Ginger Rogers did everything he did… backwards and in high heels.” Women in leadership and governance face similar challenges, and have been similarly underestimated. Producer, performer and activist Sandy Mayzell has created a playful, experiential, values-based program that celebrates Canadian and Indigenous women in political leadership and cultivates the values of democracy and good citizenship.

In this session she’ll explore the program and its context in contemporary culture, sharing interactive videos and exercises in civics and storytelling, and student-created mini-docs about women in history.

A Brandeis grad, Sandy Mayzell draws on her skills as performer and filmmaker and her passion for positive change to create arts and educational programs about women and girls in leadership. She founded Dancing Backwards Society to implement dancingbackwards.ca, which focuses on engaged citizenship and gender parity and leadership in governance.
