Description:
Do you wish your teachers had made learning math easier by making you able to 'see' what was happening with understanding? Visualizing is a way of making math real, concrete and even artistic. In this session, you will experience "thinker toys" (manipulatives), diagrams and models that will build your understanding in many ways and extend thinking. How might artists give insight and beauty into problem solving? This workshop will be an interactive, imaginative, and collaborative exploration. Come join us for some playful learning! Fred Harwood is an award-winning Mathematics educator who volunteers as a Math Mentor teacher in Richmond, helping teachers understand more of the big ideas of mathematics and inquiry. He continues to teach as a teacher-teaching-on-call from Kindergarten to Calculus. For over 45 years, Fred has sought to educate, fascinate, and inspire life-long learning and a love of mathematics.
