Description:
Led by Instructor Jim Roddy, the course looks at the earliest settlers and civilizations of South America up through the Inca Empire. From the Chavin people of 1,000 B.C. to the Chimu people of 1,000 A.D., these ancient peoples shared a fundamental vision of the cosmos-social organization patterns, subsistence strategies, construction techniques and especially religion were things they held in common. The course covers what is known of the Amazonian tribes as well as the Adean cultures of the War, the Chimu, the Sican, the Inca and the Spanish conquest. The course aims to explore both the amazing archeological discoveries in South America and, more importantly, what those discoveries tell us about the lives of the World's ancestors from a still poorly understood part of our planet South America. Based on a Great Courses DVD, each of the six sessions cover two topics. The DVDs will be supplemented by disucssion and online videos.
