Grade 1 BALLET

Following on from the Primary level, the knowledge and skills gained through successful completion of the Primary Examination will provide a preparation for RAD Graded Examinations in Dance.

A student that successfully completes Grade One will be able to perform simple movement sequences showing an awareness of basic techniques in ballet. At this level, the student will be introduced to 'Character Dance' – the theatrical presentation of national dance. This will help the student develop a natural sense of rhythm. Through Character, the student will gain an appreciation of contrasting dance disciplines and their accompanying music. From this newly developed awareness of musicality in ballet, the student will have a sense of appropriate timing and rhythm. In particular, the student will be proficient in 2/4 and 3/4 time signatures. Finally, the student will begin to show an awareness of performance in ballet. This syllabus develops the student's physical skills, stamina, creativity, expression, and musicality using a range of sounds and musical styles. This strong foundation prepares students for a successful transition to ballet and other dance genres.

In Grade 1 Ballet, students are eligible to participate in their second examination with the Royal Academy of Dance. Students are assessed by a RAD Examiner through observation of the performance of all the exercises and dance. Successful candidates receive an Examination Result Form, a Certificate, and a Medal from the RAD.

Syllabus: Warm-Up, Barre, Floor and Center Practice, Skills Progressions, Music Appreciation, Dance Study, Showcase Routine, Cool Down and Révérence.

Performance: London has organized multiple performance and demonstration opportunities for students, to build confidence and to gain experience of dance outside of the studio.  Please ensure that you support your child in these opportunities as they are an important part of their dance training.

Student COMMENCEMENT - Saturday, June 22 - 14:15.  This is an important day for all students as it formally acknowledges a year of dedication and learning completion.  Please ensure your child participates in the milestone day!

Uniform: The visual appearance of a dancer is as much a part of the art of Dance as the movement itself. Classroom attire is particularly important. It must allow the dancer complete freedom to experience movement while maintaining safety. It must also allow the instructor and observer the opportunity to view the alignment of the body and the movement itself. At the London School of Dance, we maintain a strict policy regarding the wearing of regulation uniforms and correct grooming. Please see below for the required uniform for this level.
