Start your welding journey here!  MIG or Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) is the perfect place for new welders to begin learning the craft.

MIG welding is used to join steel sheet metal from 24 gauge to 3/8" thick, so after class you'll be capable of assembling a wide range of projects, from sculptures or furniture.  For thicker materials, we recommend our Stick Welding class.

What to Bring

• Full length pants and closed-toed shoes.
• Hair ties for longer hair
• Please wear natural fibers (wool,cotton,etc) for fire safety
• No dangling jewelry, rings, or loose clothing.
• We recommend you bring your own safety glasses if possible.  Maker Nexus will supply them for students who do not have their own.

Equipment Certifications
After passing this class, attendees who are Maker Nexus Hobbyist, Student, or Family Add-On members will be certified to independently use the following tools in our makerspace:

• MIG function on our Miller Multiprocess Welding Machines

Members over the age of 16 will be cleared to use these tools independently. Members younger than 16 may only operate this equipment under the active supervision of a parent or guardian with an active membership who is also certified to use the same tools.

Please note, this class does not prove the student with an industry-standard professional welding certification acceptable by the American Welding Society.

Check-Off Available
Members who have prior training and/or experience with MIG Welding may request a Check-Off.  Members who can demonstrate their competence will be exempted from this required class, after which they can use this equipment independently.  The fee for a Check-Off on this class is $20, which can be paid in person at Maker Nexus.  To request a Check-Off, please post your request in the #class-requests channel of the Maker Nexus Slack and we’ll set up a time with a proctor.
