Location: Wood Lathe Area | 1330 Orleans Drive, Sunnyvale, CA, 94089

Description:

Take your lathe skills to the next level - learn to make bowls, cups, boxes, and more while keeping your tools sharp!
In this hands-on advanced workshop, you'll learn to cut away the inside of a wood blank to create convex shapes, and make a wooden bowl of your own to take home.  You'll learn:

  • Basic safety and best practices for working with large wood blanks on the lathe
  • How to shape your bowl and prepare it for lathe work on both ends of your piece
  • How to use a bowl gouge to hollow out your piece

Keep your lathe tools sharp and your cuts clean. If you do a lot of work on our lathes, you know that cutting with a dull tool can be not only frustrating, but potentially dangerous.

In this hands-on tool training class, you'll learn how to use our Wolverine tool grinding jig to sharpen lathe tools that have a u-shaped cutting edge, like gouges.  We'll also show you how to sharpen scrapers.

We'll cover:

  • How to set up our Wolverine grinding jig
  • How to sharpen scrapers using an angled grinding platform
  • How to sharpen roughing gouges, bowl gouges, and spindle gouges using the Wolverine Jig's vee arm.
  • Safety measures, tips and tricks for getting a sharp edge.

To learn about sharpening skews and hand tools (plane blades, chisels, etc.) sign up for the next levels, Tool Sharpening II: Lathe Skews and Tool Sharpening III: Chisels & Plane Blades.
