In 643, Xuanzang, on horseback, departed Xian, traversed the Taklamakan Desert, crossed the Tian Shan Mts, then followed the old silk road through the ‘Stans. At Samarkand Xuanzang turned south, passing through the Kyber Pass to India and Nepal. His journey would last seventeen years.

Seven centuries later Admiral Zeng He sailed from the mouth of Yangtze, exited the South China Sea, and navigated the straights of Malacca to Sri Lanka. Later Zeng discovered the Arab world, finally sailing south along the African coast.  Zeng, with a fleet of four hundred, made seven similar voyages from southeast Asia west to India and Africa.  One hundred years before Christopher Columbus discovered America!
