Description:

Ron Krystynak

When Deng Xiaoping rose to power in China in 1978, he initiated an economic model whereby a market economy could be compatible with not only capitalism but also socialism. This set the nation on a course of economic liberalization, whereby in a relatively short period of time, China became the second largest economy in the world. This class draws on London School of Economics Professor Keyu Jin's book, The New China Playbook, where she explains China's unique economic model. We will explore Chinese culture, with its emphasis on education, diligence and frugality and how its tradition of placing community interests above personal interests influences its economic model (in contrast to the Western emphasis on the individual).
