Description:

6 WEEK CLASS

This course, with a four hour format, is for serious artists of all levels from beginning through advanced.  Guidance will be offered on issues such as composition, color, tools and techniques, but the emphasis of the course will be on thinking creatively.  Individual attention will be available whenever needed.  The course will include a group discussion of the students' works.  A former abstract expressionist, the instructor's current painting style is tightly controlled realism; he will be demonstrating and discussing his painting methods for those interested, but students will be encouraged to choose their own subject matter and painting style.  IMPORTANT:  students will be responsible for bringing all necessary materials, including any desired photographic reference (not of someone else's painting please) beginning with the first class. You can find a Blick Art Materials shopping list here.

Notes: CONCEPT-BASED OIL PAINTING SUPPLY LIST Bring these supplies with you to the first class. Buy them at an actual art supply store, not at a hobby store. Then ask the sales people there for help if you don’t understand any of the following. ESSENTIAL SUPPLIES & MATERIALS REFERENCE MATERIAL: Bring at least three sharply-focused images that you find interesting to the first class. Ideally, shoot the images yourself. Do not bring images of other people’s art. PAINTS: Buy only good quality oil based paints, 1.25 oz (37 ml); no water based or acrylic paints. Titanium White Raw Umber Burnt Umber Yellow Ochre Ivory Black Burnt Sienna Cadmium Red Medium Ultramarine Blue Cobalt Blue Cadmium Yellow Medium Raw Sienna Cerulean Blue Viridian Sap Green Other paints at your discretion, but avoid colors identified as“phthalo” or “phthalocyanine”; their intensity can be hard to control. BRUSHES: Buy the best brushes you can afford; bristle brushes if you want bold marks and heavy texture; sable or synthetic sable if you want a smooth surface and a lot of small detail. An assortment of styles (i.e., rounds, flats, filberts) in a range of sizes that seem consistent with the size painting you envision. If you are unsure about brushes, buy just a few and discuss this with me in the first class. KNIVES: Two small, trowel-shaped palette knives; check their flexibility and buy fairly rigid ones. CANVAS: Pre-stretched, or other suitable surface. Pick a size that makes sense with your reference material. LIQUIDS: (1) Small jar of Liquin Original medium and (2) Small can of odorless brush cleaner. Brush cleaner tank such as “Silicoil” for the brush cleaner. No mineral spirits or turpentine. PALETTE: Disposable pad, 12” X 16” or larger, without thumbhole. ADDITIONAL NECESSARY ITEMS: Roll of paper towels; sheet of plastic (trash bag is OK) to cover work space.
