Join Poh Tan in this storytelling time to connect with plants at Bloedel Conservatory. In addition to being a scientist, Poh is also a hula dancer and she learned with Kumu Josie de Baat from Halau Kia'i O Ka Hula. Join us to learn a few basic steps of hula and how hula can help tell meaningful stories about our environment. For this activity, you need to bring a sarong or a cloth that you can wrap around your hips to be able to dance. No previous experience with hula is needed. If you enjoy it, you can continue practicing and progressing in some hulas moves and learn new stories in a second session to be presented in September (spots are reserved separately). Please email us in advance if you require seated Hula (the instructor can provide Hula Noho, which are sitting hulas). Poh Tan is a scientist, author, entrepreneur and educator with a Ph.D. in Experimental Medicine and currently pursuing a second Ph.D. in Education. Her research focuses on understanding scientific literacy development through different lenses, including Indigenous Hawaiian epistemology. She has published several research articles, authored and co-authored book chapters, and is a big advocate of STEM education. Notes: Cancellation policy: No refunds will be given for education courses. For cancellations with one week's notice, a credit will be applied to your account. With less than a week's notice, no credit will be given. No new credit will be issued if the cancelled course was purchased using prior credit. Program cancellation by the VBGA due to Public Health Restrictions will result in education program credit equivalent to the value lost. Credits must be used within one year from the date issued.
