Join us for the opening event of the Greater Vancouver Bird Celebration on the eve of World Migratory Bird Day. This free event includes fun actvities facilitated by local bird-related organizations, birding tours in the garden, engaging speakers and amazing prizes. Learn about all the exciting Greater Vancouver Bird Celebrations programs from May 10-May 26. This event is for all ages, novice and experienced birders alike.

Schedule of Activities

5:00pm to 6:00pm: Meet local organizations who care about birds for some fun activities and join an environmental educator for a birding tour in VanDsen Botanical Garden.

6:00pm to 7:00pm: Hear from some amazing expert speakers who love birds.

7:00pm to 8:00pm: Stick around for some mingling, games, and some amazing door prizes!

Bird Fact and Fiction - With Rob Butler

Join us for Bird Fact and Fiction, a question and answer section with renowned local ornithologist Rob Butler. How do robins find earthworms? Why do crows fly to roosts (and where are their roosts)?  Bring your curiosity and your best bird questions for this fun interactive presentation!

Birding Short Film Screening - discussion with Jack Bailey, Shiun Okada and Liron Gertsman

Join us for a screening of three bird-themed short documentaries produced for the CBC Creator Network by local filmmakers Jack Bailey, Shiun Okada and Liron Gertsman. Panel discussion to follow. 

"The Young Birders": This short follows conservation biologist and British Columbia birding legend Melissa Hafting, and members of the BC Young Birders Program. As we follow a young birders field trip, we explore the positive role that birds have on our mental health and wellness, how birds can aid in healing in the face of grief.

"The Commute": Every night, thousands of crows from around Greater Vancouver gather on one street to roost. Their commute across the city parallels the daily commute of people heading home from work, captured in this short film.

"The Ptarmigan Trek": What is a week like in the life of a professional wildlife photographer? This short follows Liron Gertsman on a journey into the mountains of western Canada, trying to find one very elusive bird: the White-tailed Ptarmigan.
