BNS band is excited to enter its 6th year. This year we’re planning to add music literacy to our after school offerings. Band will be afterschool on Wednesdays for instrumental classes and some supplemental upper elementary classes, with a possible chorus option, and afterschool on Thursdays for early childhood music and movement, chorus, and music literacy grades 1-5.
Band is open to all students K - 5th, irrespective of ability to pay. Your child is guaranteed a spot in next year’s band if you register your child by June 30, 2023. Please register now. The first week of lessons will be on Wednesday, October 4th and Thursday, October 5th. All children in band must register for aftercare, and that link will be made available in the fall.
Ukulele is available for 1st and 2nd graders and will run on Wednesdays with the possibility of some classes on Thursday as well. All other instruments (violin, percussion, trumpet, guitar, clarinet, sax, trombone, flute) are available for 2nd-5th graders.
In the fall, children will rank their top instrument choices and Sarah will work to make sure all of our beginners are happy with the instrument they get to learn. All instrumental students will receive a book and a band instrument when they start our class, as well as a music stand to keep at home. Children will be expected to practice their instrument daily for 10-20 minutes, and to bring their instrument to school on Band days.
All instrumental students will learn from a professional musician on their primary instrument and will learn instrumental technique along with many other aspects of musicianship. These skills will transfer to learning any instrument and any musical pursuits in the future. Instrumental learning has been shown to support academic success and promote social and emotional well-being. We’re excited for another great year.
