Description:

Sailing One is the gateway course and foundation of the Core Curriculum. It is not just a beginner class. It is designed to fill in any missing skills for those with some sailing experience but without prior formal training.

It covers all the fundamentals and best practices for sailing as well as safety, rules of the road, right of way, courtesy, tides and current, required equipment, weather warnings, capsize recovery, and seamanship – all the things every responsible boater should know. It is a prerequisite for Sailing Two and an ideal prep course for the State boating certificate course/exam (a requirement for powerboaters in CT). In fact, we use the same student manual.

All Core courses blend some shoreside teaching with on-the-water training. Sailing One uses a fleet of simple single-sailed daggerboard dinghies, the RS Tera. Two students per boat, who alternate at the helm. We also spend some time investigating channels, shallows, and tidal currents in tandem kayaks.

Greenwich Residents

Tod’s Point Sailing School is located in Greenwich Point Park which requires Town issued Beach Passes or Guest Passes for access to the Park. Greenwich residents can apply for Beach Passes at Town Hall.

Out-of-Town Visitors

Out-of-town parents dropping off and picking up their children for scheduled Tod’s Point Sailing School programs may enter the park in accordance with the following guidelines. The parent must show proof (TPSS Registration receipt) that the children being dropped off are enrolled in a sailing program on that specific date. The Gatehouse Gatekeeper will hold the driver’s license while they drop off the student(s) and return it when the driver exits the park. That normally takes approximately 15 minutes.

As a reminder, if someone in the car is planning to stay at the beach and not leave immediately, they need to have a day pass to stay in the park for that day. If the parent dropping off the children plans on staying in the park, they would need a parking pass for the car and a day pass for each person in the car. The passes can be purchased on line Monday through Friday from May 1st through October 31st.

Out of Town Non-Resident Guest Passes can be purchased online on the Town of Greenwich website here.
