Description:

April 17 - This program will provide an introduction to the concepts we will explore further during our trip to the Qualicum Beach Museam on April 24.

We will learn how fossils and artefacts provide evidence about the past. We will discuss evidence of human civilisations from thousands of years ago, and consider how we might make a time-capsule of life today. We will also excavate our own plastic dinosaur “fossils” and learn about some of the fossilised species that have been found here on Vancouver Island.

April 24 @ 10:00 - 11:30 AM This program will take place at the Qualicum Beach Museum, where we will learn all about artifacts and fossils from the past. With a museum interpreter, students will learn about ammonites and the difference between a fossil and a pseudofossil. Then, during a nature walk, we will study an example of First Nations Coast Salish contemporary art and reflect on the connections between art and nature. Students, will also get the chance to explore the social history gallery, where we will hear Pentlatch words, learn about the Qualicum First Nation history and culture, and discuss archeological evidence with a museum interpreter. Finally, students will watch videos about the history of Qualicum Beach, operate a butter churn, and guess what some other historical objects are.
