Description:
May 1 - This program will provide an introduction to the concepts we will explore further during our trip to the G.R. Paine Horticultural Training Centre on May 8. In this program, we will learn about soil chemistry, plant anatomy and processes, basic needs for plant growth, and how we can optimise the environment to help plants grow! May 8 - This program will take place at Vancouver Island University's G.R. Paine Centre, where we will get a tour of the Horticulture Centre and have a chance to apply our horticulture knowlege from the previous week! With a horticulture centre guide, students will learn about the Paine Horticultural centre and have the opportunity to ask questions about what they see. Students, will also get the chance to learn about native plants and explore the horticulture facilities. We recommend students bring a snack and water for a small picnic after the tour! This program covers BC Science curriculum including: Survival needs All living things sense and respond to their environment Multicellular organisms rely on internal systems to survive, reproduce, and interact with their environment The nature of sustainable practices around BC’s resources Experience and interpret the local environment Make observations in familiar or unfamiliar contexts Observe, measure, and record data, using appropriate tools, including digital technologies (use soil nutrient measuring devices?) Express and reflect on personal, shared, or others’ experiences of place
