Description :

Join us for the beloved CityFolk's community program initiative "What's In The Song". This program invites young musicians, songwriters and poets between the ages of 12-18 to gather in small groups to work on the craft of songwriting. Over 8 weeks, each hour and a half long session will be broken up into: a) listening to and analyzing the forms and structure of songs, old & new b) overview of basic chord forms and musical key concepts c) group writing and techniques for idea development d) individuals will bring in ideas for friendly feedback from the mentor and group. The goal is to create at least two complete songs, each of which will either be performed by the individual, group, or the mentor at a community coffee house on the evening of Tuesday, June 11th, after the final week the program. Participants who successfully complete the program will also receive weekend passes to the 2024 CityFolk festival. Successful students who fully participate in the program may even earn a spot to perform at CityFolk 2024! This program is not just for performing musicians, but also for those of you who like the idea of writing for the fun of it and possibly having other people perform your work on stage. Songwriting is a viable art form and career path now offered in universities and community colleges across North America.

Meet the instructor, Matthew Chaffey! Matthew Chaffey is an Ottawa born singer/guitarist/keyboardist who has been performing for two decades. Matt is known for his voice work fronting bands The Split and Texas MAC and his own solo project. Through collaboration with Austin natives the Texas Horns he has performed throughout Texas and recently a number of his compositions have been featured in major American TV shows.
